Boat Winterization: Protect Your Boat Before the Freeze!

A Little Preparation Now Can Save You Big Repairs Later!

As temperatures drop across Central Washington, it's time to think about protecting your boat for the winter months. Whether you spend your summers cruising Lake Chelan, surfing the Columbia River, or fishing Banks Lake, proper winterization is one of the most important steps you can take to protect your investment.

At Bob Feil Boats & Motors, our professional service team helps boat owners prepare for the colder months so their boats are ready when warmer weather returns.

Why Is Winterization So Important?

When temperatures fall below freezing, water left inside your boat's engine, cooling system, ballast tanks, or plumbing can freeze and expand, potentially causing serious damage.

Cracked engine blocks, damaged pumps, and broken fittings can lead to expensive repairs that proper winterization may help prevent.

But freezing temperatures aren't the only concern. Months of inactivity can also contribute to fuel deterioration, corrosion, and battery issues.

A little preparation now can help prevent costly surprises when it's time to get back on the water!

What's Involved in Winterizing Your Boat?

Every boat is different, and the winterization process depends on its engine, systems, and equipment. Here's a look at how our service team helps prepare your boat for winter storage.

1. Protecting the Engine

Your engine is one of the most important components to protect during winter.

Our Certified Marine Technicians are trained to service a variety of inboard and outboard engines, including 4 stroke Mercury & Yamaha, Mercuiser, Indmar, PCM and more.  We can also service and winterize Honda, Suzuki, and Volvo Motors as well.

Our winterization process includes draining water and circulating properly rated antifreeze through applicable engine cooling systems. Our technicians follow engine-specific procedures, including bringing certain engines to the required operating temperature, to help ensure proper winterization and protection against freezing and corrosion.

2. Winterizing Ballast Systems

For wake and surf boats, ballast systems require special attention.

Water can remain trapped in ballast bags, tanks, pumps, and hoses. Protecting these components is essential to keeping your surf boat ready for next season.

Our marine technicians flush and winterize these systems, circulating antifreeze where appropriate to help prevent costly freeze damage.

3. Fuel System Protection

Fuel can deteriorate during extended periods of storage, potentially causing performance issues when boating season returns.

Adding fuel stabilizer, when appropriate, helps protect your fuel system during the off-season.

As part of our winterization process, our technicians may also run certain engines using our dedicated aviation-gasoline (AV-Gas) fuel supply to help prepare the fuel system for storage, where compatible with manufacturer requirements.

4. Battery Care

Cold weather and months of inactivity can take a toll on your boat's battery.

As part of our winterization process, we disconnect batteries or turn battery switches to the OFF position, as appropriate.

Proper battery maintenance, including charging and storage precautions, can help extend battery life and reduce the chance of problems in the spring.

5. The Extra Details Matter!

At Bob Feil Boats & Motors, winterization goes beyond protecting the engine. Our team also pays attention to the smaller details that help keep your boat in good condition.

Depending on your boat's equipment, additional winterization steps may include:

  • Removing the drain plug and securing it in a bag on the steering wheel.
  • Checking trailer tires and brake fluid.
  • Draining and winterizing onboard heating systems.
  • Draining and flushing applicable water-carrying systems with antifreeze.

These extra steps help protect your boat and trailer while they're tucked away for the winter.

Protecting Your Boat with Proper Winter Storage

Once your boat is winterized, choosing the right storage option is another important step in protecting your investment.

At Bob Feil Boats & Motors, we offer several storage options to fit your needs:

  • Outdoor Uncovered Storage – An affordable seasonal storage option. Shrink wrapping is required.
  • Outdoor Covered Storage – Added protection from rain, snow, and the elements. Shrink wrapping isn't required but is recommended.
  • Indoor Climate-Controlled Storage – Keep your boat sheltered in a temperature-controlled environment throughout the off-season.

More Than Just Shrink Wrap!

Did you know that not all shrink wrap is created equal?

At Bob Feil Boats & Motors, we use high-quality protective shrink wrap designed to provide more than just a barrier against the elements.

Its benefits include:

  • Weather Protection: Helps shield your boat from rain, snow, wind, and debris.
  • Moisture Management: Designed to help reduce condensation and the risk of mold and mildew.
  • Soft, Nonabrasive Interior: Helps protect painted and gel-coated surfaces from scratches and rubbing.
  • Reusable Protection: With proper care, removal, and storage, your shrink wrap may be reusable for 3–4 seasons!

That's added protection for your boat and potential savings year after year.

Ask our team how to properly care for and reuse your shrink wrap!
